The identification of the environmental and energetic efficiency of the merchant vessels is essential for the preparation of transport policies and for the benchmark of the performances and their possible improvement. In this perspective, TECNITAS has developed a tool which allows to estimate gas emissions (CO², NOx and SOx) for the main types of vessels presently in service (indexes/operational levels).

The calculation tool developed by TECNITAS is parametric. It allows to make customised estimations for a given vessel. The tool combines performance calculations based on vessel’s technical characteristics, statistical data and manufacturer data. The methodology focuses on the definition of mean performances, mainly for continuous ratings or sailing conditions.

The tool was validated during the study conducted in cooperation with MLTC, thanks to the support of associated shipowners who have provided actual operational data obtained from a traffic or a line.

As a result a large spectrum of environmental performances is made available for various vessels types which can be used for: 1) global estimations or analyses by transport segment or type of traffic, 2) for the comparison of individual performances of a given vessel.
