In their overwhelming majority, RO-PAX vessels are powered by two mechanical shaft lines.
The draught of such vessels being limited, the propulsive performance is generally altered by the small diameter of the propeller disks. Although they are equipped of tunnel thrusters, their manoeuvring phases can become rather delicate and cause the loss of valuable time, depending on the harbour's layout conditions.
Under the impetus of changing environmental regulations, we were approached by Scandinavian client in the scope of a preliminary study for a RO-PAX. The study considered the possibility of equipping the ferry with a PUMP JET PODS as a compact propulsion solutions, other types of PODs having proven too cumbersome to be included in a shallow draught and under a low loading bridge.
From the operational viewpoint, clear benefits occurred in terms of manoeuvrability, loading time span and reduced consumption, enabling vessels that have a segmented operational profile to benefit from all the advantages offered by the flexibility of electric propulsion.
Moreover, the removal of the mechanical shaft lines should make it possible to consider a reorganisation of the ferry in terms of naval architecture , hence leading to significant gain in cargo capacity.
This contribution is intended to offer ways of relaxing certain architectural constraints, through the use of the PUMP JET PODS, in order to optimize future RO-PAX ships.
