Marine pollution regulations for 2012 - Solutions - Regulation texts from 2000 to 2012
Eric BERDER, Direction de la Sécurité Maritime
Symposium on the marine pollution regulations until 2012
Many international or regional conventions deal with marine pollution. The regulations impacting ships design are mainly contained within the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) conventions : MARPOL ranks first, but other conventions on anti-fouling systems, management of ballast waters or ship dismantling must not be overlooked.
After a review of the organisations in charge of prescribing regulations, the presentation will be mainly focused on the Annex VI of MARPOL on pollution of the atmosphere, which aims to reduce SOx and NOx emissions. These recent regulations will induce increasing evolutions of fuels, engines and their associated equipment, in several steps. The presentation will also tackle the current developments in the IMO on green house gases.
