In the process of evaluating the performances of a naval platform, seakeeping behaviour is one of the major concerns of naval architect, because it goes along with the safety of the platform. Although the numerical codes in seakeeping domain have been increasingly successful, model tests still remain necessary. In early 2000, the French marine institute, Bassin d’essais des carènes (BEC), built a new towing tank facility which is dedicated to physical simulation on large scale model and high sea state. This new towing tank has almost 545 m of useful length, for a width of 15 m and a depth of 7 m. The wave generator is a dual flap-type wavemaker of 15m wide and is able to generate wave of 1m crest to trough. The paper presents the results of an extensive measurements campaign of the wave generation and propagation in the tank. The knowledge issued from those results is directly integrated in the operating process of the tank when used for seakeeping trials. It also increases the reliability of the seakeeping tests conducted in the wave tank.
