Autonomous underwater vehicle: technologies status

Hervé AYREAULT, DGA/CESMA

International Autonomous Surface Symposium (ASSS 2008)

Even though, today, the integration in boat of unmanned underwater vehicle must be considered usual, new technologies induce of new kind of robots: the autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV).

Conscious of the necessity to minimize human exposure to the danger and to reduce of cost, but also motivated by new applications, searchers and manufacturers develop technologies to reduce or eliminate the use constraints in offshore or military deployments.

Due to their working environment, the AUVs have got their own technologic constraints: the undersea environment disallow the easy use of diesel engine and is impermeable to radio waves.

To reduce these constraints, developments are focused on electric generators, acoustic communications, navigation systems, artificial intelligence and embedded processes.

The paper will show in detail the architecture of AUV and associated technologies.
