Sensors for the evaluation of the fatigue damage accumulation of a welded structure.

Marc BOUSSEAU, DCN PROPULSION, CESMAN - La Montage (France)

Instrumentations aboard ships, intended to evaluate strains and stresses, develop, meeting a need for a better use and a follow-up of the damage in service. They are necessary but not sufficient if one wants to be able to consider a residual lifespan evaluation. In this case it is also necessary to have the structural detail fatigue resistance -N curves and a cumulative damage model.

Parallel to these monitoring systems, studies multiplied on the development of fatigue damage sensor, made up of a thin metal plate with a mechanical notch which can be comparable with a crack. Fixed at the structure which one wants analyse the damage, it is under displacement control conditions, which involves the crack propagation. The crack length increase makes it possible to evaluate the damage undergone by the structure. The principle as well as the possibilities and the limits of these fatigue damage sensor are the subject of this document.
