All the ships move in a marine environment disturbed by weather conditions and their operating conditions. In particular, the disturbances related to the swell have a strong impact on the the propulsion system equipments in amplitude of loading and frequency when they are classically controlled in speed. The result is to induce an oligocyclic mechanical fatigue on the equipment being able to lead to their destruction. It results important works of maintenance on the main engines of propulsion.

A research task realized by DCNS BU PROPULSION with the assistance of the laboratory IRCCYN in CENTRALE NANTES show that it is possible to apply an approach of identification of the experimental swell to design numerical generators of disturbance. Their use on a simulator of a complete propulsion system, containing diesel engines (CODAD), allows the ability to analyse and compare various strategies of regulation of the propulsion system.

From these studies, a new concept of regulation was designed and validated by experiments aboard Guepratte frigate. The sea trials of the new regulation show a better exploitation of the propelling sources and an improvement of nautical qualities of the ship.
