This study has been performed within the Subproject 1 (hydrodynamic loads) of the Cyclope project. This project was partially financially supported by the French Ministry of Economy Finance and Industry and took place between 2003 and 2006. It was run in partnership between Principia R.D. (calculation tools and methodology, project leader), Aker Yards (designer), Bureau Veritas (rules), Centrale Nantes (CN) (numerical and experimental R&D), DGA / Bassin d’Essais des Carènes (BEC) (experimental methods).
The work performed aims at elaborating design methods alternative to the classification rules for the rational estimation of the hull girder strength. Like the project itself, the paper is composed of three parts : methodology, experimental devices and calculation tools. It broaches the different important sides of the problem : definition of the load cases to take into account, estimation of the wave loads (quasi-static and impulsive), by experimental or numerical methods, validations of the numerical methods with basin tests.
