The French SOS-Stabilité research project aimed at improving small fishing vessel behaviour and their ability to sail in rough seas depending on their sailing mode (in course or fishing).
The goal was:
- to better know and model phenomena involved in dynamic stability issues occurring on this kind of vessels;
- to develop solutions for improving their behaviour and security, especially through the design of appropriate embedded systems.
This article presents various parts of the project carried out by DCNS Research/SIREHNA: sea and basin trials with a 23 m trawler and free models of 2 m and 8 m equipped with very complete measurement systems; development and validation development of a ship behaviour time-domain simulator; development of an embedded system demonstrator able to give information and warnings to sailors, to avoid dangerous conditions or to improve ship control in these conditions.
