The gm-meter tests, numerical techniques to improve the stability tests
Alain COTA, Société SEPAC – Paris (France)
Digital techniques have allowed us to build an apparatus which measures the height of the centre of gravity of a ship. Error analysis showed that measurement of list and displacement needed to improved. These improvements were made by using more sensitive and accurate equipment and by refining procedures. This gave us the opportunity to review previous and new procedures.
The principal characteristics of this device are :
Complete and continuous recording of the whole experiment, the possibility of calculating further measurements after the test, evaluation of the precision of measurement, the measurement of the ship’s displacement and rolling period.
This last point allows us to check displacement when the geometrical characteristics of the hull are poorly known.
