The 24th of January 2005, the catamaran « Orange II » crossed the starting line of the Jules Verne Trophy at Ushant Island. By cutting the ligne 50 days 16 hours 20 minutes and 4 seconds later, the maxi-multihull set up a new reference time beating by more than a week the former round the world record. The goal of this paper is to outline the architectural process which could lead to this performance. Some particular aspects concerning the materials and the construction of large composite parts will be discussed. The method of analysis of the data collected during the circumnavigation will also be exposed.
