Deep water drilling: means, equipment, operations
Grégoire BUVIGNIER, Dietswell SA
With the raise of energy needs and the gradual maturation of onshore fields, oil companies turn increasingly toward the exploitation of offshore resources, especially those located in deep waters. The large discoveries made in the past few years in deep and ultra-deep water offshore Brazil and African coasts (especially in Angola, in Mozambique and in Tanzania) ensure an increasing share of the deep offshore in hydrocarbon production
This document will initially outline the basic techniques of drilling. It will then present different types of offshore drilling units, and particularly deepwater units. Also drilling operations specific to subsea development will be detailed. Finally some figures will be provided, related to deep offshore drilling and investment it represents.
