Sea water piping materials of ships built by DCN for the French Navy may be of different natures. The choice is made with criteria of cost, corrosion resistance, mechanical characteristics and maintenance feasibilities.
For the present ships, the possible choices are between:
- for surface ships, copper-nickel circuits with nickel-aluminium bronze accessories,
- for submarines, galvanised steel circuits with copper alloys accessories or nickel base alloy circuits with titanium alloys heat exchangers.
This paper describes particularly the use of copper-nickel 90-10 in DCN, qualifications that have been done and recent damages on this alloy, in circuits and sea water heat exchangers.
