Optimization by structural calculation in shipbuilding

After an overview of the various structural optimization methods, the use in ship building is highlighted. Two typical size optimization examples are introduced: optimization of the main section scantlings for a RoRo carried out thanks to a ship-oriented tool (LBR5), and thickness optimization of various plates within a large cruise liner thanks to a finite element solver (PERMAS). Finally critical aspects of topological and shape optimization are discussed. An example of topological optimization applied to a subpart of a longitudinal bulkhead is presented.
