Within the framework of the « Optipropulseur » project focused on economic trawlers, a consortium lead by Ship-ST (Naval Architect from Brittany) has been set to improve the efficiency of current trawler with the purpose to reduce the gasoil consumption.
DGA TH shows that the gain in efficiency, just by adding a stator upstream to the propeller, depends on the initial rotating energy of the fluid in the propeller. The gain is low in the case of a propeller with a high rotation speed.
Gains obtained by the numerical study have been confirmed by the self-propulsion tests in the towing tank with the trawler model equipped with the pump-jet. The pump-jet associated with the improved rudder allows a 13.5 % reduction of the power in 10 knots transit conditions. The gain grows up to 16.6 % in 3 knots conditions.
Sea trials, expected this year, will provide first conclusions concerning the real gain in efficiency of the improved propeller.
