Wave loads on the deck of bulk carrier type Capesize or Panamax. M.V Derbyshire casualty and its consequences

Guilhem GAILLARDE, MARITIME RESEARCH INSTITUTE NETHERLANDS

The Derbyshire, a 294 meters bulk carrier, disappeared with her 44 members of crew when she encountered the Typhoon Orchid off the coast of Japan on 9th September 1980. Although her loss did not make a lot of noise for the last 20 years, apart in the British public opinion, she yields nowadays a unique in depth scientific study undertaken on behalf of the UK Department of Transport and the High. Court. The results of this study will be delivered to the International Maritime Organisation and the IACS members (International Association of Classification Societies) in order for them to revise their actual regulation and establish new standards to increase the safety of such vessels.

This paper explains the role played by the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN) during the Derbyshire court case and gives a summary of the model tests techniques used to determine the hatch cover loads and related collapse risks for recently built bulk carriers.
