Recent technological advancements have allowed to design innovative vessels with improved performances. However, regarding ship design and operation this brings about new requirements that only a thorough knowledge of ship behaviour may meet. An important part of Sirehna's activities is dedicated to the improvement of this knowledge, mainly through two complementary approaches:
. The performing of sea trials, with the application, by operators, of sophisticated measurement systems, in order to obtain an accurate description of the phenomena, to validate the measurement techniques and to collect experimental data allowing to test and validate data analysis methods.
. The installation of autonomous monitoring systems on board during the ship exploitation, allowing on the long term to monitor ship behaviour and the associated sea state, by exploiting in real-time raw data coming from sensors and information regarding ship steering.
This article presents solutions currently used and/or selected by Sirehna for both approaches, and describes in particular a method for sea state estimation using onboard measurement data. In close cooperation with Chantiers de l'Atlantique, a first monitoring system, developed within the frame of the Eureka project HULLMOS®, is being installed onboard the cruise vessel Infinity.
