The Ro-Ro passenger ships - the evolution of regulations

R. DUSSERT-VIDALET, SNCM (France)

Symposium ATMA/EURONAVAL: "Rules and Regulations for naval and merchant ships" – Ship operation

The maritime casualties which have occulted in passenger ship traffic have led the maritime authorities to change the rules to avoid in the future such casualties. Two main means have been used by IMO :

- training crew and safety management improvements on board of ships which are described in the STCW Code (International Convention on Standards of Training Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers 1978 as amended in 1995) and in the ISM Code (International Safety Management).

- passenger ship architecture and equipment improvements which have been introduced by the last amendments to the Solas Convention (1992 -1995 - 1997)

The goal of this paper is not to list the content of these rules but to explain the means used by SNCM to apply these new rules.
