Symposium ATMA/EURONAVAL: "Rules and Regulations for naval and merchant ships" – In-service survey and maintenance
Classification Societies are with and, beyond others, essential actors in matter of safety in the International Maritime Transport. Their roles are currently double and are analysed in the paper.
First of all, they ensure the classification of ships, by inspecting the ship's structure and its main propulsion and manoeuvrability equipment parts with respect to rules they have stated and which, of course, progress continually to take into consideration the technical evolution as well as the lessons from the return experience day after day.
Their second role, more recent, is in the certification. The sudden awake of the consciousness of the international aspect in the maritime transport, unfortunately illustrated by the dramatic accident of the Titanic, led to the emergence of the constitution of the first International Convention: the Safety of Life and Sea (SOLAS)
