Electric propulsion with PWT, advantages and perspectives

Alain GUERAUD, ALSTOM- Chantiers de l'Atlantique - St Nazaire

The first electrical propulsion using PWM converters feeding a double star winding synchronous motors was delivered by ALSTOM to Chantiers de l'Atlantique and installed on board MS MISTRAL, first newbuilding of the Greek owner FESTIVAL Cruise.

After a short description of the IGBT itself and of the propulsion equipment, we will discuss the advantages of such a type of converters with respect to volume and mass reduction of some electrical parts and we will compare performances to those obtained with classical synchro-converters.

Finally we will explore the possibilities given by this converter type, especially for the motor choice. The use of the induction motor which is robust, cheaper can lead to a more reliable system in POD propulsions. They allow also to reduce or eliminate some equipments. At the end we will see how the improvements made by motor manufacturers can help to eliminate too low power factor or narrow airgaps.
