Hydrodynamic performances of cruise liners with pods
Roger LEPEIX, CHANTIERS DE L'ATLANTIQUE – St Nazaire
The new developments in electric engines for the propulsion of ships led to the use of azimuthing pods for passenger vessels, mainly for cruise operations. The engines are installed outside the main hull, and can give to shipbuilders and owners interesting features in many aspects.
The performances of these podded driven cruise vessels are discussed in the paper, in power/speed, in manoeuvring, and in hydrodynamics in general, and compared to conventional ships.
The specific aspects in the operation of such vessels are also presented. Studies are on the way on these questions at different levels, including European cooperation.
