Water-jets in shipbuilding
Christian GAUDIN, Responsable du Développement - Chantiers de l'Atlantique
The water jets are based on the reaction principle. The water is sucked under the hull via a water inlet, it receives energy from a high efficiency pump and the water is propelled as a jet at rear of the ship via a nozzle. So, a thrust is produced which propelled the ship ahead.
A device installed behind the nozzle allows the orientation and the reversing of the jet for the steering and the rear motion of the ship.
This recent marine propulsion set appeared at the beginning of the eighties, is now very successful, mainly for the fast ships propulsion and particularly for the Fast Ferries.
