Innovative electric alimentation and engines for the noiseless propulsion of ships

The authors present an overview of different industrial solutions for electric propulsion of vessels. The paper contains two parts. The first part concerns the variable speed drives using a synchronous machine fed by current converter. The smoothing of the torque is introduced by using an active filter connected to the machine side. The experimental results obtained on a real equipment are presented. The second part, concerns technical evolutions of synchronous machines for electric propulsion.
