In-service ship energy efficiency – BUREAU VERITAS SEEMP notation

Energy efficiency optimization is the main driving force for existing ship emission mitigation. The challenge that is faced by owners today is to optimally combine some of these measures in order to obtain a fuel efficient and environmentally friendly ship at the lower investment cost as possible in the present economical down turn and reinforced environmental regulation. In that perspective, Bureau Veritas has developed a specific notation named SEEMP Additional Notation mainly backed on an in-house developed ship modeling tool SEECAT which simulates in the time domain different energy flows and energy systems on board. This energy simulator is based on an holistic approach, which takes into account interactions between the various energy producers and consumers. It is used to verify an elaborated SEEMP and to highlight potential savings along with CO2, NOx and SOx emissions mitigations for a realistic time wise description of the ship operational profile. A large Ro Ro Passengers Vessel energy model has been developed within the granting of the SEEMP Notation to Brittany Ferries Cap Finistère. A number of solutions for reducing fuel oil consumptions and air emissions are presented in the paper. Also the regulation framework is recalled and finally the advantage of adopting a global and analytic approach of prioritizing energy efficiency measures is discussed.
