New rules development for the classification of the FSRU
Simon CLENET - Bureau Veritas - Nantes (France)
Philippe CAMBOS - Bureau Veritas -Paris (France)
Bureau Veritas has developed a unique combined technical expertise in the offshore and LNG On shore regasification terminals and LNG transportation. FSRUs (Floating Storage Regasification Units) are at the limit of these 3 industries.
Based on this experience, new integrated Rules for the Classification of Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs), have been updated and published in 2017. These rules take into account this experience accumulated during the last 15 years, during which Bureau Veritas was actively involved in the design assessment of several projects of FSRUs either during the FEED phases or within the classification society of the unit. This gave the opportunity to apply the new integrated Rules for the Classification of Offshore Floating Storage and regasification Units.
These projects have been varying from small to large scale projects, with capacities ranging from 0.5 to 6.3 MMtpa, with a range of storage capacity from 25,000 cu.m (Exmar) to 263 000 cu.m (MOL) and 173,000 cu.m (Excelerate Energy) and have considered a large variety of Cargo containment systems, LNG transfert systems, etc…
The paper presents the new rules and a panorama of the various design options.
