The manufacturing of a submarine pressure hull implies multiple cold forming and welding operations. In order to tackle both performance and security requirements for such critical naval structures, a major challenge lies in controlling the geometry as well as the residual stresses generated within the thick pressure hull during its assembling process. These parameters highly influence the maximal depth that can reach the hull before collapse under pressure. Moreover, for a better control of cost and deadlines during construction, another challenge lies in optimizing the sequence of forming and welding steps for producing and assembling the different elements composing a hull.

To answer these industrial challenges, numerical simulation of forming and welding appears nowadays as an appealing solution for supporting the design, the manufacturing as well as the maintenance of a submarine hull.

As part of a French Defense Technology Project named “AMERICO” and with the financial and technical support of DGA, Naval Group has recently completed several R&D studies in order to improve its capabilities for numerical simulation of both forming and welding of thick steel plates representative of a submarine hull. The final objective of this project consists in developing an industrial numerical tool which enables to provide input data (residual strains and stresses) for design and to support both construction and maintenance processes (ordering of forming and welding conditions and sequences.
