The Walkers of Cherbourg
R. NGUYEN-HUU dit LONG, DCN CHERBOURG
P. CODEN, DCN CHERBOURG
A transfer system able to move and position heavy sections ofhull, and also the completed submarine type LE TRIOMPHANT, was needed by DCN to achieve that major defence program.
This presentation starts with the requirements and the comparison behave the three main competitive solutions to fulfil them :
-rails and transfer cars, well suited for naval construction,
-skidding systems, widely used for large civil engineering works,
-walking systems, recently developed and finally chosen by DCN .
An overview of the research and development phase is given to explain how the basic system was largely extended and thoroughly tested to be sure it will fit the highly demanding specifications. Safety studies and related operational procedures to achieve the requested level of reliability are then described with the return of experience crowned by a 100% the thirteenth of July 1993 with the walk out of LE TRIOMPHANT on thirty four walking units.
This reference was used by the Pakistani Navy to choose a walking system for up doting the shipyards dedicated to build the DCN AGOSTA 90 B submarines.
