The availability of high power continuous wave laser sources (25 kW) makes it possible to consider laser welding for the assembly of large ship steel hulls.
We examine the quality of butt welds and fillet welds in 12 mm thick plates, according to the nature of the shielding gas, the power and velocity ranges being used, the welding position and the adjusting conditions of the beam concentration system.
We also determine the geometric tolerances in the preparation and positioning of the products to be: welded.
Finally, some indications are given as to new developments.
