MESMA: characteristics and safety analysis

Working with 4 French Companies (Air Liquide, Technicatome, Bertin, Themlodyn) and a Spanish Company (BAZAN), French Directorate for Shipbuilding (DCN) is carrying out the development of an AIP system (MESMA) aim of which is to increase significantly the autonomy in depth of diesel electric submarines.

After a short presentation of the system and an evaluation of the expected performance, the article explains the method adopted to realize safety analysis taken into account the risks linked to this kind of system. This method is illustrated by its applications to liquid oxygen storage. in conclusion, the article shows the safety options adopted since the design stage.
