In the field of the manoeuvrability studies , the stabilisation of a submarine under the waves appears to be a challenging one. The Bassin d'Essais des Carènes has performed a lot of studies to develop a numerical code which simulate the behaviour of the submarine under the waves . However , the tests continue to be necessary to evaluate the numerical code and the stabilizer of the submarine .
In order to study the behaviour of the submarine , the Bassin d'Essais des Carènes has designed and developed a new method of testing a free running model in a seakeeping basin .The design of the method has been helped by two devices , the free running model and the optical tracking system which had been developed some years before .
The underwater tracking system is set under a carriage which follows the model .The tracking system measures the gap between the model and the middle axis of the tank .This distance will be transmitted to the autopilot which controls the model .This system seems to be adequate for studying the behaviour of a submerged body in complicated manœuvres.
