Towards sophisticated and safe navigation contribution of classification societies
A. TROUSSE, Direction Nouvelles Constructions,BUREAU VERITAS, Paris La Défense
While on-going modern aids to navigation are generalizing, with the reduction in the number of crew members of the watch, the need for standards and regulations is felt, aiming at maintaining a safety level at least identical to, or even higher than that given by classical means. The question of a single Officer of the watch alone at night is now raised, and the chronology of its evolution provided. This is followed by an attempt to analyse the conditions necessary for navigational safety.
Several aspects of the Human Factor are being considered such as ergonomics, physiology, mental performance, night vision and vigilance. An original experience of a software-aided vigilance system is described with results in situ.
Finally, a review is carried out of the particular characteristics and risks inherent to the navigation of fast ferries as well as of the needs in various fields (technological, human, rules) the emergence of which is now felt.
