The need of product data ex change between numerous user systems is continually increasing. To meet this need, the NEUTRABAS project proposed to connect these systems to a neutral database in order to exchange data through this latter. Such a system has been investigated for a ship which is a good example of a large multifunctional system four separate partial models have been developed to represent the ship. A unique and coherent integrated ship reference model is proposed; it covers ship life cycle from design to production. The information processing system needed to create and populate the database and to handle and manage the data has been defined.
A prototype of the NEUTRABAS system has been implemented; tests were carried out and showed the feasibility of the system.
The project was carried out in compliance with the current development of the international standardization inside the ISO frame; it cooperated to this development in an active way.
