Hydrodynamic comparative tests between two research vessels: monohull and catamaran
PH. MARCHAND, IFREMER
P. LEMESLE, CAREHNA/SIREHNA
IFREMER is to build a multipurpose research vessel (28 m long) to be operated along mediterranean coast. Two concepts have been investigated : monohull and catamaran. These two ships designed by french shipyards were compared from an hydrodynamic point of view. The paper deals with experimental results obtained during resistance and seakeeping tests conducted about four types of self-propelled hull. Aspecial bulb was choosen improving both resistance and seakeeping capablilty (pitch reduction of 20 %). The monohull equipped with such a bulb was then hydrodynamically compared with a catamaran also equipped with bulbs. Tests Were conducted by CAREHNA in the Nantes (ECN) towing tank. The paper presents were conducted by CAREHNA in the Nantes (ECN) towing tank. The paper presents results about resistance, seakeeping capability of self propelled models on both regular. and random front waves (4 waves spectra including two mediterranean ones). In addition seakeeplng tests were conducted in slide waves. Finally, IFREMER because of his particular requirements decided to have a catamaran built in OCEA shipyard.
