After a short recall of specifications of ship design and of peculiar hydrodynamic problems related to small ships, this paper gives a presentation of the various hydrodynamic tools used, in Nantes by ENSM/LHN, SIREHNA and CAREHNA. Considering several practical examples, emphasis is made on the benefits to use such tools regarding ship performance improvements and also on the limits of applicability of these tools. One indicates finally the main directions of development in order to be able to cover the needs generated by new concepts of small fast ships.
