Following a presentation of the probabilistic methods for the risks of failure analysis of
structural element, the method for the evaluation of the HASOFER-LIND index is resented with an application to scantling rules study.
The results of the application of the method to scantling formula of spherical and stiffened cylindrical sub-marine shells are then given and discussed.
Finally, it is considered the problem of the sensitivity of the safety index to the variation the parameters which enters in the strength calculations and to the assumptions on the distribution laws of the real values in built elements pointing out the caracter of relativity of the present results.
