Static mechanical characterisation of a monolithic composite material for hull of surface ship

F. TERRAIL, Ingénieur des Etudes et Techniques d'Armement, au Service Technique des Constructions et Armes Navales ( STCAN ).

Mechanical testing was performed in order to characterize the glass reinforced plastic (GI~P) material. This composite material should be used to make the hull of the ocean-going anti-mine ship (BAMO) at the DCAN LORIENT.

It is necessary to know the mechanical characteristics of the used materials when designing the ship, witch is one of the tasks of STCAN.

Many tests were required (tension, compression, bending and shear) since the material is highly anisotropic.
