In the context of the project ESPADON (Évaluation incrémentale de Solutions Potentielles d’Automatisation de Déminage pour les Opérations Navales) financed by the Délégation Générale pour l’Armement (DGA), a surface drone was studied, developed and constructed by DCNS to realize tests of deployment of minesweeping systems - that means without human intervention on board.
The aim is the integration on a surface drone with a modular logic – that means in an exclusive way – of a towed sonar or autonomous underwater drones and their system of launch / recovery; these minesweeping modules being remotely operated.
This report presents the various performances expected for this ship, the technical solutions which were retained as well as the main stakes in the study: the design and the construction of a ship with a ambitious calendar and complex interfaces between the integrated modular systems and the ship itself.
DCNS was responsible for the design and the construction of the ship demonstrator of surface drone, whereas the two other companies of the group – ECA Robotics and Thales Underwater Systems – were responsible for the design and the construction of the minesweeping systems and their demonstrators.
