During the last years, different types of fatigue induced fractures have been observed, due to the increase of the ship size and the optimization of the marine structures. This optimization was induced by the multiplication of computerized structural analysis and the intensive use of high tensile steel. The authors of this paper present the most typical structural damages experienced during the latest quarter of century and how they were treated by Bureau Veritas. The damages have concerned all types of ship and of Offshore Floating Units (FPSOs, FSOs…) of all sizes. The paper presents the most typical damaged cases, analyses the roots of the failures by using structural models, and finally shows the adopted methods of repair.
