Fire constitutes the most important tl1reat for a ship, but the multiform feature of this menace was, discovered lately. Indeed only the risks of flammability and smoke generation from materials were taken into account for many years, leading to classification criteria of material with regard to these risks almost universally accepted. The problem toxicity of gas and vapours emitted by materials in case of fire appeared more recently, and therefore standards of classification for materials related to their potential toxicity in case of fire do not yet exist.
Since many years, the Centre de Recherches et de Techniques Sous-Marines carried out laboratory studies about this problem and recommended .3 method for comparative classification of materials, especially fittings. This paper relates in detail and with the help of examples that method, which results on calculation of a "critical quantity of material CQM" .
