Propellers are major sources of induced vibrations on ships when operating in the hull wake field. This paper presents a simple analytical formulation of the six components of unsteady forces and moments on propeller blades and hub due to the hydrodynamic loading.

A numerical procedure made possible to point out the influence of several pertinent parameters as aspect ratio or pitch distribution. The calculations have been correlated with experimental measurements using a six component dynamometer. The comparison shows a good agreement between calculated and measured unsteady loadings except in some cases when the wake evaluation is unsatisfactory for reliable estimations of the fluctuating forces on the propeller.
