We have recently been confronted with the study of the behaviour at sea of a mechanical assembly consisting of two crane barges lifting a heavy load. A heavy lift operation consists of several phases, of which one of the most cons training is the positioning of the load on its ultimate support. The aim of our study was to evaluate the sea states that allow the unloading operation to take place whilst respecting the positioning tolerances of the load and minimising the risks of shocks, avoiding thus damages of equipments. The problem was twofold ; on the one hand, we had to deal with hydrodynamics with two bodies in a finite water depth, and on the other hand, write the mechanical equations of the load and model all the interactions.
Here , we are more particularly interested in proving :
the complexity of modelling lift problems
the importance of hydrodynamic interactions
the importance of mechanical interactions
and in giving the guide lines that have allowed us to deal with the problem in the frequency domain.
