In view of the constant search for lesser dependency and lower field development expenditures, it is expected that semi-submersible units will be increasingly used for exploration as well as early production systems.
The originality and the diversity of these units require for each type a specific safety approach and a precise risk identification. Risk analysis techniques, illustrated by examples of Fault Tree Analysis, allow the needed safety measures for such systems to be defined.
Quantitative risk estimates require the implementation of probabilistic methods. The techniques are presented with regard to structural failures. An over-view of fault trees computations and simulations is also given.
