Diesel engine crankshafts failures, metallurgical investigations

Metallurgical investigations have been carried out on thirty damaged crankshafts during the last twenty years. The aim of this paper is to draw up the influence of metallurgical factors on failures.

These crankshafts are classified in two categories :

-forged steel,

-nodular cast iron.

In general the laboratory experience, supported by "post mortem" investigations, suggests that crankshafts failures can rarely be attributed to metallurgical defects.

However hardened surfaces of steel crankshafts are susceptible to overheating.
