In order to meet the present and future requirements of naval hydrodynamics, the French Délégation Générale pour l'Armement has approved the construction of a new large Hydrodynamic Tunnel on behalf of the Bassin d'Essais des Carènes. After completion of the design studies, the present paper constitues a rough analysis of the scientific and technical requirements for this new test facility and an overview of the main characteristics of the project. Started in 1983, the realization of the tunnel should be completed at the end of 1986.
