Preliminary design of a sail-assisted cargo-ship

This paper presents the preliminary findings of a research program on sail- assisted propulsion for cargo ships conducted by the Institut de Recherches de la Construction Navale (IRCN) and Compagnie Générale Maritime (CGM) in collaboration, for the aerodynamic part, with the Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Ingénieurs de Constructions Aéronautiques (ENSICA).

device was designed to be fitted on a 3100 dwt chemica1 product carrier. At this stage, the purpose was not to design an operational system but rather to review and outline the main problems to be overcome in order to ensure the feasibility of the project from the economic and technical standpoints.
