This study concerns wave-energy extractors which are simply constituted by an inclined wall of approximately 30° slope behind which stands a reservoir. The overspill produced by the wave breaking on the slope is impounded at a level higher than the mean sea level. The flow returning to the sea drives a turbine, producing electricity.

In the first part we explain the design of a plunger-type wavemaker the main property of which is to minimize the near-field waves. In the second part we describe our experimental arrangement and we give some results showing the hydrodynamical efficiency dependence upon : the wave steepness, the wave number and the slope of the wall. For each slope we give an approximate formula to estimate the efficiency. Then we show how to use these formulas to calculate, for given conditions in regular waves, the effective recoverable power, including the tidal effect.
