The translation of a ship model and its prototype must be in mechanical similitude; during the extrapolation of model tests to the reality it is necessary to follow both Froude and Reynolds Conditions: it is impossible with the same fluid.
To avoid this difficulty, the total resistance of the model and the prototype is divided in two parts in which the viscous component is following the Reynolds rule and the residuary component is depending only on the Froude number.
The turbulent viscous coefficients of ships are following the "ITTC Madrid 1957" rule.
The viscous coefficient of Canals which can reach turbulent values, must be evaluated in the model and prototype tests.
It would be very interesting to avoid these computations and to be able to extrapolate only with the Froude rule.
The Polymer "Polyox W.S.R. 301" in water solution is creating a cheap fluid which authorizes this extrapolation.
