Recent studies of the propulsion bulb COSTA
O.GREGER, Ingénieur diplômé, Société MAIERFORM ,Genève
For many years, the Costa Propulsion Bulb, which is a hydrodynamical deflector body installed on the rudder in prolongation of the centre-line of the tailshaft, roused the interest of shipowners as a means of saving propulsive power and hence reducing the fuel consumption .
The studies for recent applications permitted to learn more about its behaviour under varying service conditions of different types of ships and to combine this information with the basical knowledge already acquired before.
The present paper gives an account of these studies, the results obtained and the practical conclusions to be drawn.
