This report retraces the evolution of automation in vessels since 1963 from the very first automated vessel.
It, furthermore, outlines a survey carried out for the "Most Performant and Economical Vessel" competition, the main theme being "the development of automation through the use of micro-computers".
This survey enables one to define an automated vessel of the future, constituting a coherent and optimally productive unit.
A brief study of: future problems as regards the construction and operating of this new type of vessel finalizes this report.
