During exploitation of deep offshore oil fields, because of the low temperature of the sea bottom, pipelines from production wells can be blocked or heavily damaged by formation of hydrate crystals in the production fluid. To prevent such issues, this project demonstrate by simulations and tests the efficiency of electrical heating when cleverly sized and placed on the production lines. That way hydrocarbons temperature can be kept high enough in order to avoid risks of hydrates formation. More particularly, this is demonstrated in potential “cold spots” of the network, thanks to heat transfer by natural convection of production fluid inside the pipe.
